Calls, bills and administrative tasks taken care of: Is the AI ​​everyone wants finally here? | BBC Science Focus Magazine

Generative AI has made a big difference in the roughly three years since ChatGPT was released. It triggered a massive stock market boom. It has integrated its way into our search engines and phone screens. And it has become a tool that hundreds of millions of us use every day.

But despite all this, many people avoid using AI tools. Why? Because while hiring an AI to generate text, voice, images, or videos saves you time and effort, the process of hiring it to do these tasks is cumbersome.

Entering the prompts necessary for a chatbot to understand what you want it to do can quickly become a task in itself. And you still have to do all the other tedious tasks that are part of modern life – answering emails, making appointments and paying bills.

That may be the true promise of AI – doing those tedious, mundane tasks for you. So-called “agentic AI” could do this, and maybe that’s exactly what people really want from AI – and…
