Last spring, CellarTracker, a wine collection app, developed an AI-powered sommelier that makes unvarnished wine recommendations based on a person’s palate. The problem was that the chatbot was too nice.

“It’s just being very polite, rather than just saying, ‘It’s really unlikely that you like the wine,'” said Eric LeVine, CEO of CellarTracker.
