VMware by Broadcom has unveiled an update to its Cloud Foundation and vSphere Foundation packages, fulfilling its promise of simplifying product acquisition and use. The upcoming version 5.2 of VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) introduces VCF Import, allowing standalone vSphere Compute Virtualization Platform, VSAN Virtual Storage, and NSX Virtual Networking suites to be managed as a single VCF implementation. This consolidation was made possible by Broadcom reorganizing VMware and creating a dedicated team for VCF, leading to all three tools being managed together for the first time.
The addition of live patching for VMware‘s ESXi hypervisor means guest VMs no longer need to be idle or moved during host updates, providing clear benefits. However, VMware is catching up to the live patching feature offered by the open source hypervisor Xen since 2016. Furthermore, Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG) is now decoupled from VCF, allowing users to keep up with Kubernetes updates, which are more frequent than VMware‘s products.
Broadcom views VCF as its key product and aims to accelerate its adoption and streamline its user experience. The upcoming release of VCF 5.2 in the third quarter of the year will further enhance integration and offer customers a comprehensive upgrade. This aligns with Broadcom’s strategy of selling packages and subscription licenses per core, providing customers with added value and simplifying their overall experience with VMware products.
