Broadcom’s First VCF update aims to streamline VMware stack operations

The upcoming release of VMware Cloud Foundation 5.2 marks a significant milestone as the first version under Broadcom ownership. The update, set to launch in July or August, brings several new features aimed at simplifying the user experience. One notable addition is VCF Import, which allows users to manage compute, vSAN storage, and NSX networking within a single deployment, eliminating the need to update these components separately.

Another key enhancement in version 5.2 is the ability to live patch the VMware ESXi hypervisor, improving system reliability. Additionally, Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG) will be completely decoupled from VCF, reflecting the recent reorganization within Broadcom that separated Tanzu into its own division outside of VMware.

This update aligns with Broadcom CEO Hock Tan’s commitment to streamline and simplify VMware‘s product offerings. Following Broadcom’s acquisition, more than fifty individual products were consolidated into VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and vSphere Foundation (VVF). Other divested products, including Tanzu, Carbon Black, and VMware EUC (now Omnissa), no longer fall under VMware‘s umbrella. This consolidation aims to provide a more cohesive and streamlined platform for users.

Prashanth Senoy, VP of Marketing, Cloud Platform, Infrastructure & Solutions, described the 5.2 update as a “first step” towards further innovation and simplification within VMware. CEO Hock Tan’s vision for VMware to become a “hardware-agnostic” platform underscores the company’s commitment to adapt to evolving market trends.

However, the simplification of VMware‘s product portfolio may have implications for the industry, as discussed by Jeff Ready, CEO of VMware alternative Scale Computing. Ready noted that the changes presented an opportunity for businesses to reassess their IT strategies and potentially explore alternative solutions in response to VMware‘s evolving landscape.
