According to IDC’s McCarthy, updates to VMware Edge products aim to simplify the management of large-scale, diverse edge deployments for customers. VMware is working on creating a software-defined edge to provide customers with consistency in managing their infrastructure across various environments, including the cloud.

In response to the growing prominence of AI in technology discussions, there is an increasing need to support AI at the edge. The shift towards distributed data center models for real-time processing at the edge highlights the importance of investing in AI capabilities at the edge for companies like VMware, as noted by McCarthy.

To meet customer demands and stay current with emerging trends, VMware engaged with over 100 customers in a technical preview of the Electronic Classification System 3.5, now available for general use. This move reflects the company’s commitment to understanding and addressing the evolving AI needs at the edge, while maintaining consistency in managing data center, cloud, and edge environments.

Overall, VMware’s approach to supporting a variety of cloud platforms and on-premises infrastructure makes its edge solutions more versatile and applicable than many competing offerings that are tied to specific vendor ecosystems. With the growing importance of AI at the edge, VMware’s focus on providing consistent management tools for diverse environments will continue to be crucial.
