Broadcom Reveals Cutting-Edge 400G PCIe Gen5 Ethernet Adapters

Broadcom has recently launched a new line of 400G PCIe Gen 5.0 Ethernet adapters that are highly scalable, high-performance, and low-power. These adapters aim to improve connectivity in data centers as clusters grow larger, particularly in AI data centers.

Jas Tremblay, the vice president and general manager of Broadcom’s Data Center Solutions Group, highlighted the company’s dedication to creating a highly connected and energy-efficient data center ecosystem for AI applications. Tremblay emphasized Broadcom’s focus on open standards and collaboration with industry leaders to deliver high-performance connectivity solutions for AI infrastructure. The new 400G PCIe Gen 5.0 Ethernet adapters support network-centric AI infrastructure platforms.

The specifications of the 400G PCIe Gen 5.0 adapters include support for various operating systems such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server, Ubuntu, and DPDK. The adapters offer multiple link speeds ranging from 25GbE to 400GbE and support technologies like RoCEv2, TruFlow, and TruManage.

Broadcom also introduced the BCM57608 400G NIC, designed for demanding networking requirements in AI workloads. This NIC leverages Broadcom’s 5nm process technology and delivers 400 Gbps throughput while being optimized for low power consumption. The adapter is suited for data-intensive AI environments that require sustained high performance.

The new Ethernet adapter portfolio from Broadcom is the industry’s first to be built using 5nm process technology, enabling a more power- and thermal-efficient design. These adapters support passive copper cables up to five meters and can also use ultra-low power plug-in linear optical transceivers. With the inclusion of technologies like RoCE channel and low-latency congestion control, these adapters cater to high-bandwidth AI infrastructure network environments.

Broadcom’s expertise in high-performance Ethernet solutions is reflected in this latest portfolio, featuring a sixth-generation NIC architecture. The adapters are vendor-independent and support a wide range of CPUs, GPUs, PCIe, and Ethernet switches using open standards. The availability of the Ethernet 400G PCIe Gen 5.0 family (BCM57608) is now widespread, with multiple server vendors offering them in addition to direct sales from Broadcom.

Overall, Broadcom’s new Ethernet adapters are designed to meet the increasing demand for higher data transfer speeds in AI networks. Through a combination of innovative technologies, energy efficiency, and collaboration with industry partners, Broadcom aims to provide reliable and high-performance connectivity solutions for modern data centers.
