VMware‘s Edge Compute Stack (ECS) 3.5 has been updated to simplify edge device, application, and infrastructure management across various locations, with a focus on supporting AI at the edge. Enterprises are increasingly adopting edge computing to support the scalability and performance needs of AI applications. Broadcom, which acquired VMware, has enhanced the edge management capabilities in VMware ECS and VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator solutions. The updates aim to reduce management complexity, simplify distributed location management, automate software patching, and provide insight into application and traffic behavior at the edge.
According to IDC, edge computing investments are expected to reach $232 billion by 2024, with a significant role in delivering AI applications. IDC’s research vice president, Dave McCarthy, emphasized the importance of edge computing in addressing limitations in public cloud deployments, such as network latency and regulatory compliance requirements. VMware‘s Edge Cloud Orchestrator aims to automate the management of large-scale edge deployments.
VMware‘s ECS 3.5 includes features like zero-touch orchestration, pull-based architecture, edge fleet management, a SaaS delivery model, a decoupled management and control plane, single-node updates, automatic updates, and edge infrastructure and application monitoring. These updates aim to simplify deployment across numerous sites and enable efficient management of large-scale edge infrastructure deployments.
The pull-based architecture in VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator facilitates updates and configuration changes across multiple edge sites, similar to how an iPhone updates itself. The platform is designed to manage large, heterogeneous edge deployments and offer consistency in infrastructure management for customers adding edge infrastructure to existing cloud environments.
VMware‘s approach of supporting various cloud environments and on-premises infrastructure makes it applicable to a wide range of scenarios, unlike some edge offerings tied to specific vendor ecosystems. As the demand for AI at the edge grows, VMware is focused on investing in AI capabilities to support real-time processing and inference at the edge. VMware has engaged over 100 customers in the ECS 3.5 technical preview, which is now generally available.
