British regulator examines cloud dominance of Amazon, Microsoft and Google


If competition concerns are identified, Ofcom can take action to loosen the grip of hyperscalers.

The UK communications regulator is examining the position of Amazon, Microsoft and Google in the cloud services market with the aim of identifying potential competition concerns.

Ofcom today (22 September) announced plans to probe the world’s biggest tech companies to ensure their dominance in areas such as cloud computing, messaging and smart devices is not negatively impacting people and businesses in the UK.

The first market study looks at the largest cloud service providers in the UK.

The regulator said hyperscalers Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft and Google together account for around 81 percent of revenue in the UK’s £15 billion public cloud infrastructure services market.
