Breaking free from VMware’s high costs with Virt-v2v: A guide to escaping the expense



Devconf.cz hosted the European edition of Red Hat’s developer conference. Richard Jones presented a talk on moving VMware VMs to Linux using Virt-v2v. Some customers are interested in migrating VMs from VMware due to increased licensing costs under the new owner. Despite the free edition being discontinued, other options like Hyper-V, bhyve, and Linux-based distributions are available.

Virtualization has evolved over the years, with tools like Virt-P2V in RHEL 6 now replaced by modern tools like Virt-v2v. Moving server VMs to a new hypervisor is more complex than simply exporting and importing virtual disks. Red Hat Virtualization, formerly RHEV, is now a feature in OpenShift. KVM is compatible with various distributions and is highly praised, with Proxmox being a popular choice.
