Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has stunned markets after slashing its Microsoft stake by nearly 65% in Q3 2025. New 13F data shows the trust dumped 17,000,000 Microsoft shares, equal to a -64.91% reduction, booking roughly $8.8 billion based on the quarter’s $510.13 average trading price. The move triggered a -17.7% portfolio impact, raising questions because Microsoft has long been the foundation’s anchor holding.

Microsoft shares are still up 21.70% year-to-date despite falling -2.19% over the last three months. This dramatic reduction comes as Bill Gates continues his long-term plan to donate his wealth, with a personal net worth of about $106 billion and a public pledge to give away 99% by 2045. His foundation trust, valued around $49 billion, remains concentrated even after the sale, with nearly 67% of its portfolio in just three major stocks.
