Big Tech’s original AI sin: pirating my books without compensation

It has been many centuries since people were able to read anything worth reading. But what humans can no longer do, machines can now do. The most advanced AI models today have read just about everything worth reading. And the results of such a good read are impressive and changing the global economy.

But we shouldn’t confuse this with intelligence. We’re not used to how much you can solve when you can pull information from terabytes of training data. For example, we are impressed that AI models can pass a medical school entrance exam. But if you look closely, the medical questions asked are often similar to those in the training data. Tech companies aren’t making it easy to see this by not being transparent about what their models are trained on.
