The ?? De-platforming ?? Donald Trump from Twitter, Facebook, and Google’s own YouTube – that is, Big Tech – made big headlines recently. Trump’s change in status has sparked cries of censorship among some conservatives. A more libertarian view, however, is that these are private companies that have the right to control their own content, as does private broadcasting and print media. The word “censorship” has traditionally and more appropriately been applied to government violations of the Constitution’s First Amendment guarantee of free speech.

Perhaps more worryingly, Big Tech supports law enforcement abuses of the rights of individuals domestically and contributes to human rights violations by the military abroad. Despite its reputation for independence, it was recently revealed that Big Tech’s relationship with the American National Security Institute may be stronger than previously thought.
