Last week, President Biden nominated Alan Estevez to head the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). The decision will have a major impact on the outcome of the US power struggle with China.

If so confirmed by Congress, Mr. Estevez will assume the high responsibility of administering strategic trade controls, a critical line of defense to prevent America’s adversaries from acquiring sensitive US technology and using it as a weapon. The position requires a skilled hand to determine when the effects of national security outweigh the interests of industry (read: profits).
