Over the holidays, we’re releasing some of our best features, interviews, opinion pieces, and discussion items from the past 12 months of employees and contributors alike – Items that we believe are ours the best of 2021. In them you will find our usual mixture of thoughtfulness, frivolity, retro expertise, Gaming nostalgia and – of course – enthusiasm for everything Nintendo-related. Enjoy!

With the latest in Nintendo’s crazy WarioWare range – WarioWare: Get It Together! – hit shelves recently, we thought it would be a ripe old time to take a look back at the entire series and pick the 25 very best microgames out of the thousands we’ve seen so far.

Of course, we didn’t include any of our own WarioWare: DIY games as that would be a scam – obviously our own efforts are far superior to those of the Nintendo team. There is nothing of WarioWare caught!, also because it’s a bit of junk in comparison. However, every other entry is taken into account. No, not the Nintendo 64DD Mario Artist: Polygon Studio Prototype “Sound Bomber”, clever dogs.

Either way, without further ado, grab your garlic and try the cream of the Microgame harvest. Waaaaahhh !!!

25. Go hunting

command: Trim

Source: Smooth movements from WarioWare (Wii)

A hilarious game that involves using your Wii Remote as a nail clipper only to reveal the hand whose fingernails you are cutting, which is part of an enormously long arm. Laughable visual ingenuity from one of Nintendo’s most creative and aesthetically diverse series. Level 3 trims toenails.

24. The wave

Command: Wave!

Source: WarioWare twisted! (GBA)

For a game that focuses on twisting your GBA, it’s somewhat surprising how compelling the single-button stage hosted by Kat & Ana actually is. Among many microgames that require only the tap of the ‘A’ button, this pink bear’s attempt to join a Mexican wave is the funniest and dumbest. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Hooray?

23. Sleep Clinic

Command: Hypnotize!

Source: WarioWare: Get It Together! (Switching)

Take control of your chosen character and you’ll have to manipulate a hanging pocket watch to fall asleep with a giant wario in the background. Iconography everyone knows, sensible input, and captivating graphics make this one of the best microgames in the fairly homogeneous (necessarily) get-it-together.

22. Nintendo Badge Arcade

Command: Do not get caught!

Source: WarioWare: Get It Together! (Switching)

We chose this one simply because it reminded us of it Nintendo badge arcade, especially the absolutely ridiculous number of “goes” we bought on it. These badges were just cool and we can only hope that they will come back in some form or another.

Oh right, the microgame. Uh, just avoid the claw? It’s pretty easy.

21. Wario-Land 3

Command: Reach coin!

Source: WarioWare Gold (3DS)

Wario eats himself once again when you’re pushed into a divisive Game Boy Color-Explore-’em-up version Wario-Land 3, see how you take control of Wario himself as he floats up in a bubble to grab one of the game’s elusive music coins. A clever use of the WarioWare Gold tilt mechanism and a fun blast from the past.

20. You can choose your friends …

Command: Choose!

Source: WarioWare Smooth Moves (Wii)

The series has an open fascination with nasal picking, but it’s never been more tactile than here – waving the Wii Remote like it was your own finger means poking it through a nostril forcefully into the huge nose on the screen. Schnozz-tastic and almost as satisfying as picking your own nose.

Wait, this is disgusting. Can we remove this bit? [Nope – Ed]

19. Jump rope

Command: Leap!

Source: WarioWare, Inc .: Mega Microgame $! (GBA)

Possibly the purest of all WarioWare microgames, you just see them rhythmically tap ‘A’ to jump over the skipping rope as it swings. On higher levels of difficulty, you’ll take the form of a bizarre platypus-like creature jumping much lower, followed by a moai statue head (think Gradius) that jumps as well as you’d expect.

18. No lawyers

Command: No entry!

Source: WarioWare Gold (3DS)

In the Wario commits tax evasion by forcing the door shut when the little man from the tax office comes to visit. All you do is, of course, crush ‘A’, but this one does a lot with a little. Namely, that you think about Wario’s tax accounting. What can only be guessed at is pretty bad.

17. Fragile!

Command: Dont move!

Source: WarioWare twisted! (GBA)

You’ve thrown yourselves vigorously across the room, trying to capture the mighty WarioWare Twisted, only to find a single fragile egg and the command “Don’t move!” to reveal. In fact, a single movement will cause the egg to fall over and crack and the game to fail. And in this subversion, WarioWare once again shows its genius.
