Azure now offers Oracle Autonomous Database as a service

Oracle Corp. has expanded its collaboration with Microsoft Corp. by making the Oracle Autonomous Database available in the Oracle@Azure Database combined cloud service. This fully automated and managed service was initially offered as a private option in the US Azure East region, with plans to roll out to 14 other regions. The goal is to allow organizations to securely migrate workloads between the two cloud platforms and utilize Oracle Real Application Clusters on Exadata Cloud, which also operates on Oracle Database@Azure.
According to Leo Leung, Vice President of Infrastructure and Technology at Oracle Cloud, this offering fills a gap in Microsoft’s managed database portfolio. It is ideal for customers who may not have a large IT team, as it provides unified database capabilities that can be easily scaled. Unlike Exadata, which is more suited for large databases, the Autonomous Database caters to users with more modest capacity needs. The collaboration between Oracle and Microsoft aims to enhance interoperability between their cloud services, challenging the dominance of Amazon Web Services Inc.
Developers can provision the autonomous database running on OCI in Azure data centers, taking advantage of its high performance, security, and availability. They can also utilize various tools and platforms offered by Oracle, such as APEX, Oracle Data Studio, and data lakes supporting open data protocols. The database supports SQL queries, JavaScript documents, and processing of various data types, making it a versatile platform for developers. Pricing for the Autonomous Database on Azure will be consistent with OCI pricing, and customers can apply Azure consumer credits to Oracle services.
Oracle is focusing on expanding services around Exadata and the autonomous database on Azure, including automated data protection, replication, and recovery. This partnership between Oracle and Microsoft aims to break away from the limitations of single-supplier technologies in the cloud, creating a more open and flexible ecosystem for customers. Through this collaboration, both companies are working towards providing a comprehensive and seamless cloud experience for users.
As Oracle continues to innovate and expand its services, the partnership with Microsoft is a strategic move to strengthen their position in the cloud market and offer customers a wider range of solutions. The availability of the Oracle Autonomous Database on Azure is a significant development that will benefit organizations looking to enhance their cloud capabilities and leverage the strengths of both Oracle and Microsoft platforms.
