Azure Copilot: A Review of Virtualization

Microsoft introduced Copilot on Azure during the recent event, making it available for public preview without the need for sign-ups. This new AI tool has caught the attention of many, including Paul, who expressed concerns about it potentially making junior admins reliant on it. Despite his skepticism, he found the tool impressive and full of possibilities, ultimately giving it a positive review.

As the AI hype continues to grow, Microsoft has integrated Copilot into various apps, services, and platforms, with different functionalities across different products. The pricing for Copilot ranges from a paid subscription for Microsoft 365 to the more expensive security version that costs $4 per secure compute unit per hour. The pricing for Copilot on Azure has not been announced yet, but it is likely to remain free during the preview period.

Since its initial announcement at Ignite 2023, Copilot for Azure has expanded to cover more features and services within the Azure platform. It can now assist with deploying virtual machines, web apps, and AKS clusters, as well as generate various scripts and queries. During the preview phase, there are limitations on the number of requests and chats that can be made per day.

Users have the flexibility to customize Copilot access for specific individuals or groups within an organization, with all activity recorded in the resource’s activity log. Copilot can assist in navigating the Azure portal, providing insights into resource groups and their regions. It can also help with creating new infrastructure by generating scripts for deploying Azure SQL databases and virtual machines.

In terms of database management, Copilot is available for Azure SQL DB and Cosmos DB, offering optimization suggestions for queries and performance. Overall, Copilot on Azure presents a promising tool for simplifying tasks and enhancing productivity within the Azure ecosystem.
