In 2014, Microsoft shifted to using cloud server technology, reducing the need for on-premises servers. However, some scenarios still require physical servers due to application dependencies or specific needs. Microsoft’s Manageability Platforms team uses System Center Configuration Manager for on-premises server management, but a gap in managing on-premises infrastructure and IaaS services prompted the development of Azure Arc, now in public preview. Azure Arc integrates on-premises servers into Azure management tools, enabling standard security policies and data collection. It benefits Microsoft’s Manageability Platforms team and aims to simplify IT administration for others. Early adopters are already seeing improvements in governance, management, and cost tracking. Azure Arc’s future capabilities include automated certificate renewal and expanded inventory features. The goal is to manage all servers from Azure, streamlining security and governance regardless of asset location or operating system.
