Amazon’s cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), is planning to invest 15.7 billion euros (approximately 17 billion dollars) in Spain to expand its cloud infrastructure by establishing data centers in the country. This investment is expected to create around 17,500 jobs annually in local businesses and contribute about €21.6 billion to Spain’s GDP until 2033.

The initial plan was to invest 2.5 billion euros in Spain, but AWS decided to increase the investment to 15.7 billion euros. The company will work closely with the regional government in Aragon to expand its cloud infrastructure, with 40% of the estimated 6,800 jobs to be based in Aragon. Additionally, more than half of the expected GDP contribution will come from Aragon.

The Spanish Minister of Digital Transformation and Public Service, José Luis Escrivá, praised AWS for using renewable energy to power its data centers, which aligns with the government’s AI strategy. The funding from AWS will be spread over 10 years in the region, highlighting Aragon’s status as a technological hub in Spain. The Aragon government described this investment as the largest in Spain and southern Europe.

In addition to the investment in Spain, AWS recently announced plans to invest 7.8 billion euros in Germany and approximately 1.3 billion dollars in France to strengthen its cloud infrastructure in those countries. This expansion is part of AWS’s global strategy to enhance its cloud services and support the increasing demand for cloud computing solutions.

Overall, Amazon’s investment in Spain demonstrates the company’s commitment to expanding its cloud infrastructure and creating more job opportunities in the country. It also highlights the importance of renewable energy and sustainability in powering data centers, aligning with the global shift towards environmentally friendly practices in the technology industry. The collaboration between AWS and the Spanish government underscores the potential for economic growth and technological advancement in the region, positioning Spain as a key player in the digital economy.
