AWS to invest €15.7 billion in Spain, creating 17,500 jobs in local businesses each year.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a significant investment of €15.7 billion in Spain to expand its cloud infrastructure in the country. This investment will lead to the creation of approximately 17,500 full-time equivalent jobs in local companies annually, contributing €21,600 million to Spain’s GDP by 2033.

The Minister for Digital Transformation and the Public Service, José Luis Escrivá, has emphasized the importance of this investment, stating that it places Spain at the forefront of technological innovation and Artificial Intelligence in Europe. AWS’s decision to choose Spain showcases the country’s ability to support technological talent and quality employment in the long term, while also highlighting Spain as a strategic technological hub in southern Europe.

AWS’s commitment to Spain includes expanding its cloud infrastructure in Aragon, with 40% of the estimated 6,800 jobs to be located in the region. This expansion will support industries such as construction, facility maintenance, engineering, and telecommunications. Additionally, over half of the expected GDP contribution (€12.9 billion) will come from the Aragon region.

The long-term partnership between AWS and Aragon aligns with the regional government’s goal of establishing the region as a leading national and European technology hub. The President of the regional government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, praised AWS for recognizing the region’s potential for technological investments, emphasizing the unique nature of this investment in Aragon and Spain.

AWS’s sustainability efforts include running its data centers on 100% renewable energy and aiming to be water positive by 2030. The company has collaborated on water projects in Aragon to reduce water loss through leaks and increase the flow of reused water to local farms. AWS’s commitment to sustainability also extends to supporting community initiatives, such as planting trees and making cities more sustainable.

In addition to investing in infrastructure and sustainability, AWS is focused on supporting the local community through education and social initiatives. The company has partnered with local organizations to promote STEAM education in schools, address the technology skills gap, and create employment opportunities. AWS has also launched Social Economic Funds to support local projects related to education, employment, inclusion, and sustainability in Aragon.

The AWS Spain Region plays a crucial role in supporting the digital transformation of organizations in Spain and globally. Local customers, such as Telefonica, ADIF, IE University, Insud Pharmacy, and the Spanish Red Cross, rely on AWS’s technology to power their infrastructure. The Spanish Red Cross, for example, leverages AWS technology to provide critical remote care services and combat loneliness for elderly and dependent individuals across Spain.

Overall, AWS’s investment in Spain is set to have a significant impact on the country’s economy, job market, and technology sector. The company’s commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and education aligns with its goal of fostering innovation and supporting long-term development in Spain and beyond.
