Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently announced that AWS Step Functions supports synchronous express workflows to “easily build web-based applications and orchestrate high-volume, short-lived microservices.” Express workflows, a low-cost, high-performance workflow type with a run time of up to five minutes, can now be called synchronously from the Amazon API Gateway or directly via the API.

AWS Step Functions is a serverless workflow orchestration engine that “breaks AWS Lambda functions and multiple AWS services into business-critical applications.” Step Functions offers two different workflow types: Standard workflows can be executed for up to one year with exactly one-time execution guarantees that are aimed at potentially long-running and verifiable workflows.
