The Health Telecommunications and Electrification Alliance (HETA) is part of the Power Africa Initiative focused on electrifying health facilities and improving digital connectivity in sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative, led by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), aims to increase access to renewable energy and digital connectivity in health facilities across the region within the next four years to enhance healthcare services.

HETA is a global development alliance that combines resources from the US government and the private sector to support countries in adopting renewable energy solutions for their health systems. The initiative is currently being implemented in countries like Guinea, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Mozambique, and Tanzania.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is partnering with HETA to design market-based solutions that meet the energy and digital connectivity needs of healthcare facilities in sub-Saharan Africa. The lack of reliable electricity and digital connectivity in over 100,000 health facilities in the region is a significant challenge that hinders the effective delivery of healthcare services and decreases resilience to climate change and other threats.

HETA collaborates with various partners to develop solutions that address energy and connectivity needs, extend benefits to nearby communities, and enhance overall resilience in the health sector. AWS is working on a cloud-based solution for real-time monitoring of power and connectivity infrastructure in healthcare facilities.

Through AWS, data from various sources, such as solar panels and batteries, is collected and analyzed to monitor system health and performance in real-time. Machine learning models are used to detect patterns, predict component degradation, and optimize operations to reduce downtime and costs.

The scalability and cost-effectiveness of the AWS cloud allow for the monitoring of thousands of healthcare facilities across sub-Saharan Africa, both in urban and rural settings. This approach supports the long-term viability of investments in electricity and connectivity for underserved healthcare facilities and demonstrates the value proposition to donors and governments.

Ultimately, HETA aims to sustainably scale its mission with the support of AWS, showcasing the benefits of cloud-based solutions in optimizing healthcare services in the region. The collaboration between HETA and AWS has the potential to benefit millions of people through improvements in health infrastructure and sustainability innovations.
