AWS now supports NVMe-over-TCP on Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, providing simpler and lower-latency shared block storage.

Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP now supports the NVMe-over-TCP (NVMe/TCP) block storage protocol, allowing for accelerated block storage workloads with lower latency compared to traditional iSCSI block storage. This new feature simplifies multipath I/O (MPIO) configuration over iSCSI, making it easier to deploy applications like databases and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) that rely on shared block storage.

FSx for ONTAP offers multi-protocol access to fully managed shared storage, including the iSCSI protocol. NVMe/TCP is an implementation of the NVMe protocol that transports data over TCP using traditional Ethernet as the fabric. This release gives users the option to use NVMe/TCP for shared block storage, providing the benefits of lower latency and simplified configuration.

The NVMe/TCP support is available on all Amazon FSx for ONTAP 2nd generation file systems in all AWS Regions where they are available. Users can find more information in the FSx for ONTAP User Guide.
