Among the recent AWS re: Invent announcements last week was one we almost came across: the unveiling of a new managed service using the open source Grafana visualization engine. The new service is the result of a partnership between AWS and Grafana Labs that includes the joint sale and licensing of the new service, as well as joint development to further improve the service. While AWS is no stranger to joint go-to-market and licensing agreements (think VMware), it’s uncharted territory in open source.

Specifically, AWS announced the preview of the Amazon Managed Service for Grafana, which enables you to visualize the data that is central to observability: logs of actual events; Metrics that measure key system attributes; and traces that show the end-to-end path of processes or applications consuming microservices.
