Amazon’s cloud service provider Amazon Web Services (AWS) is entering the encrypted messaging business. The company just announced the acquisition of secure communications service Wickr – a messaging app that is focused on providing services to government and military groups and businesses. It claims to be the only “collaboration service” that meets the security criteria set by the NSA.
AWS will continue to operate Wickr unchanged and offer its services to AWS customers “with immediate effect”, according to a blog post by Stephen Schmidt, the VP and CISO of AWS, who announced the news.
Financial terms were not disclosed in the short notice. Wickr had raised close to $ 60 million in funding, according to PitchBook data (a valuation of less than $ 30 million is also noted, but that seems like a very old estimate).
