Amazon has announced a major investment of 15.7 billion euros in its Spanish subsidiary of Amazon Web Services (AWS). The company plans to use this funding to support 17,500 full-time jobs across various industries such as construction, facility maintenance, engineering, and telecommunications.
This investment marks a significant increase from Amazon’s previous plans for Spain, where they had initially intended to spend only €2.5 billion and create 1,300 jobs in 2021. The economic impact of this investment is projected to boost Spain’s GDP by €21.6 billion by 2033, although Spain’s current GDP is already over 1.4 trillion euros.
Amazon’s focus will be on the Aragon region in Spain, where 40% of the new jobs will be generated. The company’s data centers in Aragon are already powered by 100% renewable energy, and Amazon aims to achieve water positivity by 2030 by implementing water reclamation and repair programs in the region.
Jorge Azcón, president of the regional government of Aragon, believes that Amazon’s investment will position the region as a hub for innovation and the cloud economy in Europe. This move is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to expand its data center operations in Europe, as evidenced by their recent investment of 7.8 billion euros for AWS European Sovereign Cloud in Germany.
Amazon’s ability to make such substantial investments is fueled by its strong financial performance, with projected revenues of around $100 billion for fiscal year 2024. The company’s growth and expansion in Europe demonstrate their commitment to leveraging technology and innovation to drive economic development and job creation in the region.
