Amazon Web Services announced the general availability of Amazon HealthLake on Thursday, a service that enables healthcare organizations to store and work with cloud-based health data. The service is part of the cloud giant’s AWS for Health initiative, which provides specialized cloud services for customers in the healthcare, biopharmaceutical and genomics sectors.

HealthLake is a HIPAA-qualified service that helps companies take advantage of unstructured health information. It uses the industry standard Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) to format data and enable companies to move it from on-premise systems to a secure, cloud-based data lake. It then uses machine learning to analyze medical terminology and clinical data, and provides standardized labels for data that make it easier to find and analyze.
