CANBERRA, Nov. 17 (Reuters) – The Australian Prime Minister said Wednesday that more than 60 areas of technology are critical to the national interest and pledged millions of dollars in funding to deter strategic rivals from targeting industries from cybersecurity to Control medicine.

In the past few months, Australia has pledged to spend billions of dollars to modernize its economy and reduce reliance on China by boosting manufacturing in industries like resources and critical minerals and supporting low-carbon technologies.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australia has identified 63 technologies that Canberra cannot let others dominate. These include advanced cyber, genomics and novel antibiotics.

“In most cases we can meet our technology needs with various well-functioning markets, but in some cases – with critical technologies – we have to ensure that we can reliably and securely access and use such technologies in good times and bad”, said Morrison in a speech.
