Australia is cracking down on “nudify” sites used for AI-generated child abuse

Three websites that created images of abuse were visited 100,000 times a month by Australians, the watchdog said.

Internet users in Australia have been denied access to several websites that used artificial intelligence to create child sexual exploitation material, the country’s internet regulator announced.

The three “Nudify” sites withdrew from Australia after an official warning, said eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant on Thursday.

Grant’s office said the websites received about 100,000 visits per month from Australians and featured high-profile cases of AI-generated depictions of child sexual abuse involving Australian students.

Grant said such “nudify” services, which allow users to use AI to make images of real people appear naked, had had a “devastating” impact in Australian schools.
