The Australian government has announced plans to create a secure cloud service for its intelligence agencies through a $2 billion partnership with Amazon. This project, set to be completed by the end of the decade, aims to enhance information-sharing capabilities within Australia’s security sector and create about 2,000 jobs.
Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles emphasized the importance of this investment, stating that it will help Australia keep up with advanced defence forces worldwide and improve interoperability with US agencies. The project involves building three data centers in Australia to store highly sensitive intelligence information, with the exact locations kept confidential for security reasons.
Rachel Noble, director general of the Australian Signals Directorate, highlighted the benefits of partnering with the private sector, stating that it will give intelligence agencies access to top technological capabilities and tools. She noted that AI could significantly impact operational theory, particularly in data collection and analysis.
To address security concerns, Noble assured that strict safeguards will be in place to prevent data leaks, with controls in place to manage access to top-secret data at an individual level. All personnel involved in the project must meet stringent Australian security clearance standards.
Marles stressed the need for technological advancements to navigate complex strategic situations, stating that modern defence forces are increasingly reliant on information technology and computing infrastructure. The project aims to ensure that Australia is prepared for conflicts that occur at a top-secret level.
While the specific types of data to be uploaded to the cloud have not been determined, Noble stated that control of top-secret data centers will remain under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth. Amazon, the partner in this project, did not disclose whether similar technologies are available to other countries or whether adversary nations could access the intelligence infrastructure.
