SINGAPORE — Peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is a matter of international concern and not just American interest, the US defense secretary said at an Asian security forum in Singapore this week.

Lloyd Austin spoke at the opening plenary session of the Shangri-La Dialogue organized by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies, where he reiterated that longstanding US policy has not changed. This includes opposition to Taiwan independence, although he stressed that the Taiwan Relations Act, the so-called three joint US-China communiqués and the Six Assurances policy will continue to guide American policy.

He also stressed the US government’s determination to maintain the status quo, which has served the region well. It is official US policy to recognize Beijing as China’s representative and to recognize its view that it has sovereignty over Taiwan, although Washington also considers Taiwan’s status to be unresolved.
