ATO warning about Australians’ serious tax mistake: ‘They don’t know’

Australians are being warned never to share sensitive information such as their tax number or tax returns using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Taxpayers are increasingly turning to online chatbots like ChatGPT to help with their taxes and get advice, but this also comes with major risks.

It may seem like common sense. However, Miriam Holme, director of Fab Tax Accountant, said there were people who shared their tax returns with ChatGPT for review and analysis without realizing the potential privacy implications.

“Now they don’t know where their data went,” Holme said Yahoo Finance.
