Asus announced its new ZenBeam latte at CES 2021 today, and it’s kind of cute. It’s a mobile movie projector that looks like a one-eyed, cloth-covered mini robot. It is important that the 720p image is triggered with up to 300 lumens of LED light, which makes it brighter as capsule projectors that we saw from Ankerand it has a built-in 10 W speaker system from Harman Kardon.
Oddly enough, Asus insists that its projector look like a coffee cup.
It doesn’t. It’s not the right shape (just watch the video!) And why should a “homely” coffee cup (Asus’ word) be gray instead of? a wonderful brown? Asus also claims it is “the first projector to offer a fabric exterior”. this is demonstrably wrong.
Of course, you can’t drink Asus’ latte as it only emits light and sound. However, it can project your phone or an HDMI device wirelessly.
Think of this as an opportunity, gadget maker: build the coffee mug Asus didn’t build. Just make sure it lasts longer than a movie – Asus quotes three hours on a 6,000 mAh battery – and gets bright enough to create a decently sized screen. Asus says that you can create a 40-inch image by placing one meter from the wall, 80 inches by two meters, and a maximum of 120 inches (presumably three meters). However, don’t expect a 300 lumen projector to be very bright at ten feet away.
Asus says it is coming to the US in the second quarter of the year, but there is no word on pricing.
