Bruce Balick wrote an urgent letter to his research partner across the country. He feared other radio astronomers were hot on their heels, including one named Fred Lo.

“We’d better publish quickly if we’re going to get it to print,” Balick wrote in the spring of 1974 to Robert L. Brown, his collaborator.
