As the US midterm elections approach, AI will become a key issue for voters Nathan E. Sanders and Bruce Schneier

IIn December, the Trump administration signed an executive order that limited states’ ability to regulate AI by directing its government to sue and withhold funds from states that attempt to do so. This action specifically supported industry lobbyists who want to avoid any restrictions and consequences on their use of AI, while undermining the efforts of consumers, advocates and industry groups concerned about the harms of AI who have pushed for government regulation for years.

Trump’s actions have highlighted the ideological commonalities around AI within American electoral factions. They set the guidelines for a new playing field for the midterm elections and prompt members of his party, the opposition and all of us to reflect on where we stand in the debate about how and where we can transform our lives through AI.
