In 1994, a job ad seeking software engineers was posted on Usenet, seeking individuals to help “pioneer Internet commerce” for a Seattle-based startup. Applicants were required to design complex systems in record time. Resumes could be sent to Jeff Bezos via the startup, named Cadabra. However, due to confusion over the name (being easily mistaken for “corpse” in phone calls), the company was later renamed Amazon.

Amazon, which celebrates its 30th anniversary on July 5, has significantly impacted the world of online shopping. It is projected that the company’s websites will generate around $554 billion in sales in the United States this year, giving Amazon a 42% share of the U.S. e-commerce market. This places Amazon far ahead of its closest online competitor, Walmart, which holds a 6% share of the market, as well as being the largest retailer overall.
