We live in a time that is often referred to as a polycrisis. One of these crises is human-caused climate change, a topic currently being discussed by delegates to the COP30 climate negotiations in Belém, Brazil.
Another reason is disinformation, much of which focuses on climate change. A third potential crisis arises from the impact of artificial intelligence on society and the planet.
There are different opinions on the topic of AI and climate change, from optimistic to pessimistic to skeptical. Given the pervasive concern about environmental damage from AI, it is surprising to some that AI is taking center stage at the COP30, which I am currently attending.
Both COP30 President André Aranha Corrêa do Lago and Simon Stiell, Executive Director of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, have highlighted the importance of AI and other aspects of technology in combating climate change.
