Arrow Lake will include Intel’s new ‘Fast Throttle’ technology enabling per-core throttling

Intel’s latest 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPUs brought improved performance but also faced overheating issues. To address this, Intel introduced a new thermal throttling technology called Fast Throttle, which allows for more granular performance throttling when temperatures rise. This approach differs from traditional methods that focus on overall chip temperature and make broad adjustments to frequency, turbo behavior, and voltage.

Known as “Intel Per Core Thermal Throttle,” this technology is set to make its official debut with the upcoming Arrow Lake CPUs. Fast Throttle utilizes clock modulation to briefly turn off the physical CPU clock of specific cores, allowing for more precise thermal management. This means that if certain cores are running hot, they can be throttled down individually without impacting the performance of cooler cores.

Initially, when Raptor Lake launched, Fast Throttle was not user-adjustable. However, Intel introduced controls for users to configure it with a late 2023 update. This change opened opportunities for overclockers and PC enthusiasts to tinker with Fast Throttle, potentially offering even more control with the upcoming Arrow Lake release.

The ability to have more precise thermal management tools like Fast Throttle can be beneficial for overclocked workstations and gaming setups where thermal limitations often restrict performance. Intel is expected to launch its 15th Gen Arrow Lake processors in the second half of 2024, with potential delays for laptops featuring the new CPUs. It has been reported that new motherboards with 800 series chipsets will support the Arrow Lake chips when they are released.

Overall, the incorporation of Fast Throttle with Arrow Lake CPUs signifies Intel’s commitment to addressing overheating issues and providing users with more control over thermal management. As the launch of Arrow Lake approaches, users can look forward to potentially enhanced performance capabilities with the ability to finely tune thermal throttling settings.
