Apple iOS 14.7 became released and it combines new iPhone hardware support with critical new security updates. It also arrives two months after its predecessor significant battery consumption therefore the expectations are high. Unfortunately, iOS 14.7 creates several new problems. So if you are considering updating your iPhone, here is everything you need to know.
Tip: Bookmark this page as I will update it if / when new issues are found. In a week I will give my final verdict.
For whom is that?
Apple iOS 14.7 is now available for all iOS 13 compatible devices. That means iPhone 6S and newer and the 7th generation iPod touch. You should be automatically notified of the upgrade, but you can also trigger the update manually by going to. navigate Settings> General> Software update. Beta Tester, if you’re running a newer version of iOS 14, if you’re reading this (see ‘The Road Ahead’ section at the end), you have to sign out your iPhone before iOS 14.7 is displayed.
Note: This guide doesn’t focus on older iOS updates or iPadOS, but I will address relevant issues in these guides.
The deal breakers
Nothing has changed for jailbreakers. Unc0verThe jailbreak is limited to iOS 14.3 and checkra1niOS 14 jailbreak is limited to Apple devices that are running on A9 (X) chipsets but is working on iOS 14.7 for these devices.
The headline message 36 hours after it was published reads: iOS 14.7 is interrupting the unlocking function of the Apple Watch via your iPhone (More details here). Apple has confirmed this and promised a fix in “an upcoming update” but has not set a time frame for it.
Additionally, early reports state that iOS 14.7 is quite buggy, including Signal problems, Apple Music and podcast errors and Problems with lossless playback. Meanwhile, the battery life issues of iOS 14.6 still exist for a range of users.
So what are you getting?
Apple’s release notes for iOS 14.7 are as follows:
- MagSafe battery support for iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
- Apple Card Family adds the option to combine credit limits and share a joint account with an existing Apple Card user
- Home app adds the ability to set timers on HomePod. manage
- Air quality information is now available in Weather and Maps for Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, South Korea, and Spain
- The Podcasts Library gives you the option to choose to watch all shows or just watched shows
- Menu option to share playlist is missing in Apple Music
- Dolby Atmos and Apple Music lossless audio playback may stop unexpectedly
- The battery service message, which on some iPhone 11 models may have disappeared after restarting, will be restored
- Braille displays can display invalid information when composing email messages
The headline here is support for Apple’s new MagSafe battery – a product the company did surprisingly well at keeping leaks off until it was released. Additionally, Apple introduced new features for the card family and continued to improve (the still buggy) Apple Podcasts controversial recent changes.
Surprisingly, Apple’s official security page has not yet published the changes to iOS 14.7 and iPadOS 14.7, so we are groping in the dark for the time being. ZecOps has at least confirmed that it fixes that increasingly problematic WiFi SSID hack that iPhone and iPad owners have been exposed to.
Apple iOS 14.7 Conclusion: hands off, especially if you have an Apple Watch
For Apple Watch owners, iOS 14.7 is a no-go, as Apple confirms that the update introduces unlocking problems that need to be fixed “in an upcoming update”. Additionally, iOS 14.7 itself appears pretty buggy – especially more so than iOS updates are usually at this late stage of their generation. Usually, new generations of iOS are full of bugs and slowly get polished as they age, but iOS 14 is currently on the opposite path.
All iOS 14 compatible iPhones will be compatible with iOS 15 too, so I wonder if this has any impact on Apple’s lack of polish towards the end of this generation, as no iPhones are left behind. In the meantime, however, there is still a lot to be done.

Along the road
It is unlikely that Apple will release another iOS 14 update (ex. IOS 14.8) as an “important point”, but iOS 14.7.1 is now inevitable due to the Apple Watch login issues. I would expect it to arrive within the next 1-2 weeks along with several other bug fixes for the other issues reported with iOS 14.7.
Meanwhile, iOS 15 continues to accelerate its launch with the second public beta now available. It will start next to that new iPhone 13 series.
