A dispute is brewing between the United States government and Anthropic, one of the technology companies that develop artificial intelligence (AI) tools for defense and civilian purposes.
According to recent reports, Anthropic’s Claude software was used in a US military operation that led to the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro in January this year.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has given the company until Friday to relax its rules on how its AI tools can be used by the Pentagon or risk losing its government contract, the Associated Press and Reuters news agencies reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.
But Anthropic refuses to neglect safeguards that prevent its technology from being used to monitor the U.S. domestic space and program autonomous weapons that can strike targets without human intervention.
