Microsoft’s Build 2024 developer conference kicked off with a special event on May 20 at the company’s Redmond campus in Washington, where several key announcements were made. These included the introduction of PC Copilot+, Co-pilot and GPT-4o, Remember, Surface Pro 11, Surface Laptop 7, and creative apps optimized for AI.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling of Microsoft’s new personal computer category, Copilot+ PC, which comes equipped with Copilot AI and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and Plus processors capable of 40 trillion operations per second. These PCs also feature neural processing units to power new AI features in Windows 11, such as making suggestions in settings, responding to notifications, and editing files in File Explorer. Additionally, the Prism translation layer enables software compatibility across different chip technologies.
The Copilot+ devices are said to be 58% faster than the MacBook Air with the M3 chip. They will be available directly from Microsoft as well as through other manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo, Acer, HP, and Asus. These devices promise faster AI assistants running directly on the device, making it a compelling reason to upgrade.
Another major announcement was the integration of GPT-4o with Copilot, featuring voice and vision capabilities. This OpenAI model can provide answers based on screen content and guide users through tasks like playing Minecraft.
Recall, an AI-powered feature, was also introduced, allowing Copilot+ PC owners to search their device history and seamlessly access past activities like web browsing, file creation, and voice chats. The data recorded by Recall is stored locally on the device for user reference and integrates with the existing Windows Timeline feature.
The Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 were showcased as the new Copilot+ PC devices. The Surface Pro 11 boasts Snapdragon X Elite and Plus chips, offering a 90% performance boost compared to its predecessor. It supports apps like Microsoft 365, Chrome, Spotify, and Zoom on ARM64 processors and features a new Surface Pro Flex keyboard.
The Surface Laptop 7, powered by Snapdragon X Elite and Plus chips, is over 80% faster than the previous model and offers longer battery life. Both devices come in various colors and screen sizes and feature improved design elements like slimmer bezels.
Microsoft also announced partnerships with Adobe and other creative software companies to optimize their applications for Copilot+ PCs. AI tools like Cocreator, aimed at enhancing creative capabilities, are integrated with Paint on these devices.
