Android’s Find My Device could soon support AR directions and UWB with Google’s latest update

Spread the love

Google is working on bringing AR-based directions and UWB support to the Find My Device app for Android users. This new feature will allow users to receive AR instructions to track their devices by overlaying a user interface on their phone camera. The app may offer AR-based directions for more than just trackers and UWB-enabled devices, expanding its functionality.

A deep dive into the app’s code revealed upcoming support for UWB and AR technology. The code references “precision finding” for UWB adapters and includes libraries to support UWB functionality. Google’s implementation of AR technology through ARCore could allow users to use their Android phone’s camera to receive AR-based prompts and instructions to find their lost UWB device.

The development of Google’s AR and UWB support is ongoing, and it may take some time before it is officially rolled out. Samsung already uses a similar AR-based UI with the Galaxy Smart Tag 2, but it requires a Galaxy phone with UWB capability. Google aims to make UWB technology more accessible through its Find My Device app for wider convenience.

In addition to AR and UWB support, Google is also working on enhancing network user security for Find My Device. A new biometric security option has been discovered, providing an extra layer of security for devices when the phone is not in close proximity. The app also references a “Remote lock” feature teased during I/O 2024, allowing users to lock their phone using their phone number after completing a security challenge.

Overall, Google’s updates to the Find My Device app point towards a more advanced and secure tracking experience for Android users. Stay tuned for further developments as Google continues to expand the app’s functionality and improve user security.
