Google has reduced the frequency of AI overviews in response to criticism regarding incorrect and misleading information. Two different SEO platforms, SEOClarity and SERanking, analyzed keywords to provide insights on this topic.
According to SERanking, AI overviews now appear in 8.71% of searches, down from 64% in the past. SEOClarity reported a lower percentage, with AI overviews appearing in 7.6% of searches. This reduction follows Google’s response to criticism on improving AI overviews.
One notable change is Reddit’s decreased visibility in AI overviews, no longer among the top 10 cited domains. The top domains referenced in AI overviews include runnersworld.com, Healthline.com, linkedin.com, runrepeat.com, and en.wikipedia.org.
Further analysis by SERanking shows that 84.72% of AI overviews link to domains in Google’s top 10 organic search results. Featured Snippets and AI overviews often appear together, with matching quotes a majority of the time. On average, AI overviews consist of 4,342 characters and are accompanied by ads 87% of the time.
AI overviews are most common in the Relationships, Food & Beverage, and Technology industries. Interestingly, AI overviews appeared frequently for Your Money Your Life (YMYL) keywords but not for local keywords. The home warranty, technology, and social media industries have the highest presence of AI overviews.
Despite initial setbacks, Google is evolving towards becoming an answer engine rather than a search engine. This shift may require brands and companies to adapt to a new reality with potentially less organic traffic.
The reports from SEOClarity and SERanking provide valuable insights into the changing landscape of AI overviews on Google. As the search engine continues to evolve, staying informed about these developments is crucial for marketers and businesses looking to optimize their online presence.
