An electrical fault causes a massive power outage across the Tucson area

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – An electrical fault at a substation resulted in a massive power outage for TEP customers on Wednesday, November 12th.

TEP said the incident occurred at a 46-kilovolt substation that “serves multiple neighborhoods.”

The outage, which affected more than 18,000 customers at its peak, began around 2 p.m. According to TEP, it lasted an hour and 10 minutes.

“We examined our system but were unable to determine a cause,” TEP said. “After determining it was safe to re-energize our equipment, we were able to return most customers to service. We will continue to inspect and monitor the substation and associated systems.”

As of 4:30 p.m., around 300 TEP customers were still without service.

During the outage, 13 News received reports of down traffic lights in Tucson and Oro Valley.

The Oro Valley Police Department confirmed they had officers on Oracle Road directing traffic.

OVPD said there was at least one crash due to the outages.
