Amazon, under the leadership of CEO Jeff Bezos, has been a pioneer in various industries, from selling books online to launching cloud services through Amazon Web Services (AWS). However, since Bezos handed over the CEO role in 2021, Amazon’s growth has slowed compared to competitors like Microsoft’s Azure, which has surpassed AWS in growth due to its generative AI strategy, exemplified by a $13 billion investment in OpenAI.

In response, Amazon announced its generative AI strategy in April, aiming to invest over $100 billion in data centers by 2034. CEO Andy Jassy hopes to turn generative AI into Amazon’s third breakthrough innovation, but faces challenges such as limited revenue opportunities for generative AI outside of AI chips, as well as intense competition in software and cloud services markets.

The vague details of Amazon’s generative AI strategy raise questions about its revenue goals and target customers. While Amazon offers a range of generative AI products like Graviton CPUs and the Rufus chatbot, the lack of clear communication about revenue targets leaves investors uncertain about its growth prospects compared to competitors.

AWS, despite maintaining its leadership in cloud services, is facing increasing competition from Microsoft’s Azure, which has been growing faster and gaining market share. In the first quarter of 2024, Azure’s revenue grew 31% compared to AWS’s 17%, raising the possibility that Azure could overtake AWS as the industry leader by 2026.

Amazon’s stock performance has been strong, outperforming Microsoft in the first half of 2024 with a market capitalization of $2.07 trillion. However, Amazon’s revenue growth of 12% in the first quarter lags behind Microsoft’s 17%, raising doubts about its ability to regain the 27.4% average annual revenue growth achieved between 2010 and 2020.

In conclusion, Amazon’s generative AI strategy holds potential for growth, but faces challenges in competing with rivals like Microsoft’s Azure. Clarity around revenue goals, target customers, and pricing strategies will be crucial for Amazon to regain its growth momentum and establish itself as a leader in the generative AI market.
