Amazon’s stance on halting Nvidia chip orders clarified – Times of India

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud services unit of Amazon, has clarified that it did not stop any orders for NVIDIA’s most powerful artificial intelligence chip, Grace Hopper. A previous report by the Financial Times had suggested that AWS had suspended orders for NVIDIA’s advanced “superchip,” Grace Hopper. However, an AWS spokesperson stated that the decision to transition from Hopper to Blackwell GPUs was made in collaboration with NVIDIA to improve performance.

The Financial Times report claimed that Amazon had halted orders for NVIDIA’s AI chips in anticipation of a new, more powerful model. The company reportedly shifted existing orders for Grace Hopper chips to wait for the upcoming Blackwell model. NVIDIA had announced that the next flagship AI processors, including the Blackwell chips, were expected to be available later this year. Despite these rumors, Amazon confirmed that it was moving forward with its NVIDIA AI chip order.

In response to inquiries from Reuters, Amazon explained that it had decided to acquire NVIDIA’s next-generation AI chip for an upcoming supercomputer project. The transition from Grace Hopper chips to Blackwell chips specifically pertains to Project Ceiba, a joint venture between AWS and NVIDIA to build a supercomputer. AWS clarified that while they are transitioning Project Ceiba to Blackwell chips, they continue to offer services based on NVIDIA’s Hopper chips for training AI systems.

In March, NVIDIA and Amazon had announced the transition of Project Ceiba to Blackwell chips, signaling the advancement in AI processing capabilities. The collaboration between the two companies aims to leverage the new Blackwell chips for enhanced performance in their supercomputer project.

Overall, Amazon Web Services’ decision to upgrade from NVIDIA’s Grace Hopper chips to Blackwell GPUs signifies a strategic move to improve processing power and efficiency in their AI initiatives. By partnering with NVIDIA on advanced chip technologies, AWS aims to maintain a competitive edge in the cloud services industry and provide innovative solutions for their customers’ AI needs.
