Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a significant investment of 15.7 billion euros in Spain, aimed at improving its services in the country and Europe as a whole. This investment is expected to create 17,500 full-time equivalent jobs in local companies annually and contribute 21.6 billion euros to Spain’s GDP by 2033.

The Minister of Digital Transformation and Public Function, José Luis Escrivá, highlighted Spain’s position as a leader in technological innovation and Artificial Intelligence in Europe. He emphasized the country’s ability to support technology talent and quality employment in the long term, citing AWS’s decision as a testament to Spain’s attractiveness as a strategic technological hub in southern Europe.

The Aragon region in Spain is set to benefit the most from these investments, with 40% of the supported jobs being created there. Amazon plans to create 6,800 jobs in Aragon across various sectors such as construction, facility maintenance, engineering, and telecommunications. Additionally, a significant portion of the expected GDP contribution will come from Aragon.

In line with the sustainability focus of many tech companies, Amazon highlighted its commitment to using 100% renewable energy in its AWS data centers in Aragon starting in 2022. The company also outlined plans to return more water to the community than it uses by 2030 through various water projects with local partners, including initiatives to reduce water loss through leaks in old pipes and increase the flow of reused water to local farms.

Overall, Amazon’s investment in Spain demonstrates the country’s attractiveness as a destination for innovative companies looking to establish a presence in Europe. The focus on sustainability and long-term job creation further reinforces AWS’s commitment to supporting local communities and fostering economic growth in the region.
