Amazon Web Services (AWS), the computing division of tech giant Amazon, is seeking to invest billions of euros in expanding its data center business in Italy to enhance its cloud offerings in Europe. This move underscores AWS’s efforts to strengthen its presence in various regions around the world, including Singapore. In Singapore, AWS announced plans to invest 12 billion Singapore dollars over the next five years to bolster its cloud infrastructure and services in the Asia-Pacific region. This substantial investment will be used to build and develop data center capabilities that will support the region’s digital economy.

AWS first established its presence in the Asia-Pacific region in Singapore in 2010, marking its expansion outside of the United States and Europe. Since then, the company has invested more than S$11 billion in Singapore’s cloud infrastructure and ecosystem. AWS Singapore country manager Priscilla Chong highlighted the company’s commitment to the ASEAN region by emphasizing the importance of digital skills development and training for individuals. AWS has already trained over 400,000 people in cloud skills in Singapore since 2017 and aims to continue investing in skill enhancement and productivity in the country.

The growing demand for cloud computing services and data centers, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), has positioned cloud service providers like AWS as key players in the digital economy ecosystem. These providers offer organizations access to critical digital infrastructure, computing resources, and AI capabilities, thereby facilitating digital transformation and innovation. Tan Kiat How, Minister of State at Singapore’s Ministry of Communications and Information, emphasized the crucial role that cloud service providers play in supporting businesses and fostering digitalization across the region.

In efforts to stay competitive in the cloud infrastructure market, AWS continues to expand its presence in Southeast Asia. Last year, AWS announced plans to establish new regions in Thailand and Malaysia with significant investments to cater to the growing demand for cloud services in these countries. This strategic expansion aligns with AWS’s goal of providing secure and resilient infrastructure across diverse regions and supporting the digital transformation of businesses worldwide.

Overall, AWS’s investments in Italy, Singapore, and other Southeast Asian countries underscore the company’s commitment to enhancing its cloud infrastructure and services globally. By expanding its data center business and capabilities in key regions, AWS aims to strengthen its position as a leading cloud service provider and support the digital economy’s growth and innovation.
