Amazon’s AWS Considering Multi-billion Investment in Italian Data Center Expansion – Assicurazioni Generali, Amazon.com

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon.com Inc., is in talks with the Italian government for a significant investment to expand its data center operations in the country. This move is part of AWS’s strategy to enhance its cloud services in Europe.

The negotiations are focused on determining the scope and location of the investment, with options including expanding the current AWS site in Milan or establishing a new data center. AWS first launched its infrastructure in Italy in 2012 and had previously committed to investing €2 billion ($2.2 billion) in the country by 2029.

The planned investments by AWS are projected to contribute €3.7 billion to Italy’s GDP through 2029. Notable clients of AWS in Italy include luxury car maker Ferrari, insurer Assicurazioni Generali SpA, and energy supplier Enel.

Recently, AWS congratulated Ferrari Formula 1 driver Carlos Leclerc on his victory at the Monaco Grand Prix on social media. In addition to the potential investment in Italy, AWS announced a €15.7 billion ($17 billion) investment to expand its data centers in Aragon, Spain, until 2033. This new commitment replaces a previous plan announced in 2021 that allocated €2.5 billion over 10 years to Spain.

While AWS’s investment in Italy is expected to be substantial, it may not reach the level of its investment plans for Spain. In Germany, AWS also revealed plans to invest €7.8 billion through 2040.

Overall, AWS’s expansion plans in Europe demonstrate its commitment to enhancing its cloud infrastructure and services across the region. The company’s investments are not only aimed at expanding its presence in key European markets but also at contributing to the economic growth of these countries.

As AWS continues to strengthen its data center capabilities and partnerships in Europe, it is positioning itself as a leading provider of cloud services in the region. By investing billions of euros in expanding its data center operations, AWS is demonstrating its long-term commitment to serving its customers in Italy and other European countries.
