Amazon Web Services (AWS) is making long-term investments in China, focusing on delivering generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology and supporting Chinese companies in their digital transformation. Rob Chu, corporate vice president and president of AWS Greater China, stated that the company will continue to invest in generative AI and drive enterprises to accelerate their digital transformation and AI innovations in the country.

AWS has established specialized teams to deliver industrial solutions, artificial intelligence, and cloud services to various industry segments such as automotive, manufacturing, life sciences, retail, media, entertainment, gaming, and finance in China. The company plans to enhance cooperation with Chinese smart mobility solutions provider NavInfo, particularly in smart connected vehicles and smart driving technology development and mass production. Chu emphasized the importance of generative AI in industrial applications and its potential for creating significant value in the future.

Generative AI involves computer algorithms trained with vast amounts of data to generate content like images, text, audio, and video. It underpins US research firm OpenAI’s ChatGPT and is expected to add substantial annual value to the global economy, as per a report by McKinsey & Co. The banking, high-tech, and life sciences industries are likely to benefit the most from generative AI.

Since entering the Chinese market in 2013, AWS has continued to invest in the country, aiming to assist Chinese companies in expanding internationally and enhancing their global competitiveness. Wu Lianfeng, vice president and chief research analyst at IDC China, highlighted the growing trend among Chinese companies to leverage AI for business growth and digital transformation. However, challenges such as innovation and collaboration issues persist, requiring companies to develop long-term digital transformation plans and invest consistently in this area.

China’s spending on information and communications technologies (ICT) is projected to increase significantly in the coming years, outpacing the global average. Xiang Ligang, director general of telecommunications industry association Information Consumption Alliance, emphasized the importance of enterprise digitalization in driving the digital economy, urging companies to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies and transform traditional industries.

Overall, AWS is dedicated to supporting the growth of generative AI and digital transformation in China, aiming to empower Chinese companies with the necessary technology and tools to thrive in the fast-evolving digital landscape.
