Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon, has announced plans to invest €15.7 billion ($17.02 billion) in building data centers in the Aragon region of northeastern Spain. This investment, to be carried out over a span of 10 years, marks the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in the region, which is already a key hub for Amazon in Spain. This initiative has been described by the Aragon government as “the largest investment in technology in Spain and southern Europe.”

This new plan supersedes a previous one announced by Amazon in 2021, where the company had allocated 2.5 billion euros for investments in Spain. The latest investment is expected to generate around 17,500 jobs annually in local companies until 2033.

According to a statement from the Minister of Digital Transformation, José Luis Escrivá, Amazon Web Services’ decision to select Spain for this significant investment positions the country as a leader in technological innovation and Artificial Intelligence in Europe. Additionally, Amazon has pledged to power its data centers in Spain solely with renewable energy sources.

The trend of cloud providers like AWS and Microsoft’s Azure investing heavily in building data centers across Europe is not new. These companies have historically concentrated their operations in specific regions, leading to the development of tech hubs in those areas.

In conclusion, Amazon Web Services’ substantial investment in building data centers in Spain’s Aragon region underscores the company’s commitment to expanding its cloud computing infrastructure in Europe. This move is not only expected to create a significant number of jobs in the local economy but also solidify Spain’s position as a key player in technological innovation on the continent. Additionally, Amazon’s focus on powering these data centers with renewable energy highlights its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
